Abstract

The current underrepresentation of women in philosophy is not only a problem for the discipline itself, but also for the quality of higher education more generally, since intellectual resources are lost. It is also a problem for the female philosophy students who find themselves in an environment they do not feel welcome in, as has been reported for decades. If the learning environment causes women to leave philosophy, this is also a challenge to gender equality in academia. In this article, I discuss some hypotheses as to why the gender gap in philosophy persists and argue that external social structures interact with internal mechanisms in the discipline. Consequently, the problem will not resolve itself, nor are well-intentioned social measures sufficient to bring about change. Internal disciplinary changes resulting in a better learning environment with an inclusive pedagogy, methodological diversity and a more representative curriculum, are needed.
